This is likely to be the major problem.
Your X server is probably configured not to start at all
when it cannot initialize the mouse (or the keyboard...).
What you see then is surely no "blue screen of death" but
the black screen of a console :-) Try pressing return,
you should see a login prompt where you can enter your
user name. From there you could start an editor to edit
your /etc/X11/xorg.conf, but you need root permissions
to do that.
