make distcheck with appdefaults fails

In app/xload running "make distcheck" create the tarballs and then 
attempts to install.

This fails for others with app-defaults.

This was discussed in October and patches at   
http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/xorg/2006-October/018777.html  

But the patch is not correct for me.

Anyways, should we be installing the X resources files?

It seems like the "make install" should only install to 
$(DESTDIR)/${prefix} and nowhere else.

What are your thoughts on this?

Or are there any examples of Makefile.am files that do the appdefaults 
correctly for "make distcheck"?

Then a message can be displayed: "Consider installing .... to ....."
