OK, after doing that the console is COMPLETELY dead, and won't even
display command-line logins with Ctrl-Alt-F1/F2. The monitor/keyboard
are working (tested on a different system).

I can login via SSH.

[root at perseus2 ~]# cd /etc/X11

[root at perseus2 X11]# more xorg.conf
xorg.conf: No such file or directory

[root at perseus2 X11]# ls
applnk fs prefdm save.xorg.conf serverconfig sysconfig twm xinit
Xmodmap Xresources

[root at perseus2 ~]# ps -ef|grep gdm
root 2664 2651 0 07:58 ? 00:00:00 /usr/sbin/gdm-binary
-nodaemon
root 2734 1 0 07:58 ? 00:00:00 /usr/sbin/gdm-binary

/etc/gdm/XKeepsCrashing
root 2796 2777 0 07:58 ? 00:00:00 /usr/libexec/gdmopen -l
/bin/sh -c /etc/gdm/XKeepsCrashing -noopen

/etc/gdm/XKeepsCrashing -noopen
root 2926 2901 0 08:30 pts/0 00:00:00 grep gdm

The last lines of Xorg.0.log say:

Fatal server error:
A driver tried to allocate the Block Memresource at
0xa0000:0xaffff which conflicted with another resource. Send the
output of the server to xorg at lists.freedesktop.org. Please
specify your computer hardware as closely as possible.

This is a standard Dell PowerEdge 750 1U rack server. According
to Dell Tech Support:

"The PowerEdge 750 system planar incorporates an integrated video
subsystem. This logic is based on ATI's Rage XL device sitting on
    the main 32-bit PCI bus."

"The PowerEdge 750 provides 8 MB of SDRAM for video, allowing for
resolution up to 1600 x 1200 at 64K colors. The SDRAM consists of
    one 143 MHz device, with a 512K x 32 x 4 organization. Video memory
    can not be upgraded"

The entire Xorg.0.log output is attached.
