Getting evdev to work

I'm having a few problems.

With 'mouse' driver my MX510 side buttons show in xev as button 2 (middle
mouse). I've tried every proto but still same result.

I used to use evdev some time ago and just installed again to try but x
crashes out - Null Pointer for mouse0

I've no idea why evdev no longer works or why the mouse driver doesn't see
my buttons anymore. This is on Slackware current xorg 6.9. Was working fine
until I did a clean install.
