I submitted the bug report, #11299:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11299

The xorg crash with avivo before loading fglrx was a simple text-mode crash.
It attempted to load the driver, but then fell back to text-mode and returned
me to the prompt. Loading avivo after loading fglrx resulted in a garbage
screen, but not a hard-lockup - it could be fixed by ssh and reloading X with
the fglrx driver. (I switched back to console and blindly loaded X with
fglrx, since I didn't have another computer available at the time.)
