Want to backup current driver before installing the lastest from git...how?

First, I'm very unclear about the roles and "position in the stack" of
kernel modules, drivers, xorg, and xrandr.  So, I need to find a good
resource for that info.

I'm trying to stay up to date with the latest dev video drivers, xorg,
and xrandr.  I just don't know how to backup (and recover from backup
if needed).  I know people have to be doing this.  Can you suggest to
me how?
