Keyboard issues when building randr++ server etc.

Hi,
Hopefully someone here can help be work out a few problems I'm having.
I decided to try the randr++ stuff and build the necessary extra stuff
from git into the prefix /opt/randr++/ in order to keep a stable system
installed and such that I can switch back to it.
Now, once I installed everything I created the following synlinks:
/opt/randr++/lib64/dri -> /usr/lib64/dri
/opt/randr++/share/X11/xkb -> /usr/share/X11/xkb
The former was needed to allow the DRI driver to load, and the latter
was an attempt to get a good keymap (not overly successful!).
I edited my xorg.conf to have a ModulePath that included the
/opt/randr++ path before the /usr path which seems successful.
BUT, when I start the server (via gdm.conf setting), I can no longer use
CTRL+ALT to vt switch, and also the 3 SHIFT+3 no longer produces a pound
sign (I've a UK keyboard), but instead just a 3 (same as without SHIFT).
When I xev, I notice the following for when I press ALT:
