Daniel, below is an output showing sh pointing to bash, so would this
eliminate your theory or should I continue checking? Thanks for your help
ls -l /bin | grep sh
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 677296 2006-12-11 15:56 bash
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4 2007-12-28 12:23 rbash -> bash
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4 2007-12-28 12:23 sh -> bash

At a guess, /bin/sh is not bash, and it's choking on the arithmetic.
Try changing /bin/sh to bash, or hand-hacking configure to launch
/bin/bash.
