CPU usage too high with savage driver

Hello,

I'm using the Debian/sid current release of X.org 7.1.1 with version 2.1.1 of
the savage driver. The machine is a Shuttle XPC with integrated S3 ProSavage8
video. I am running kernel 2.6.17.

My problem is that when playing back videos the amount of CPU used by the X
server is much too high. For a 30fps fullscreen video, the X server will use
approximately 50% of the CPU. The process doing decoding and playback
(mplayer, xine, etc.) will only use about 10-15%.

I have verified that Xv is enabled and is being used. This seems like it
might be an MTRR issue, but those seem to be set properly:

$ cat /proc/mtrr
reg00: base=0x00000000 ( 0MB), size= 512MB: write-back, count=1
reg01: base=0x1e000000 ( 480MB), size= 32MB: uncachable, count=1
reg02: base=0xd8000000 (3456MB), size= 64MB: write-combining, count=2
reg03: base=0xd0000000 (3328MB), size= 32MB: write-combining, count=2
reg04: base=0xd6000000 (3424MB), size= 16MB: write-combining, count=1
reg05: base=0xd8000000 (3456MB), size= 64MB: write-combining, count=1
reg06: base=0xd4000000 (3392MB), size= 32MB: write-combining, count=1
reg07: base=0xd2000000 (3360MB), size= 32MB: write-combining, count=1

I'm not sure why there are so many, but they seem to get set by X. And
according to the X log file, the correct MTRR appears to have the correct
value (32MB length, write-combining):

(--) SAVAGE(0): mapping framebuffer @ 0xd0000000 with size 0x2000000

This problem is not particularly new, actually. Video playback was fine with
X 6.9, but the problems started with X 7.0 and now 7.1. I haven't had time to
look into it until now.

Does anybody know why the CPU usage is so high? I use this box as my MythTV
machine. With the CPU usage this high, playback is still smooth, but there is
such a small margin for other processes to occupy, sometimes I get dropped
frames and other problems. Any ideas on why the processor load is so high?

I have attached my xorg.conf file and my X logfile.
