915 and above chipset have pixel shader (2.0 following directx spec) but no
vertex shader and no T&L stage. Under linux with mesa when the card haven't
a feature it's emulated by software (mesa stuff).

I don't know much about the intel 3d driver (i830, i915, ...) but i would have
think that it was on pair or even better than the windows one, seems i am
wrong.

Anyway there is still a lot of developement and improvement in the linux intel 3d
driver mostly thanx to intel because they pay people for this. You could also
try man intel or man i915 (ddx driver name) and see what option you got,
tweaking some option might give you a performance boost. There is also
drioption try driconf tools to see what you can tweak for intel.
