Subject: Configuring Xorg for Palmax/Cyrix MediaGX
I am newcomer to the mysterious world of xorg. But I have been spending
every spare second for the last two weeks trying to figure this out -
driving my 'other half' crazy! :-)
I am trying to install Debian Etch c/w 2.6.17 kernel & Xorg 7.1 (tried
xorg 7.0 as well) on a Palmax PD1000. This is a palmtop PC with the
Cyrix MediaGX chip - originally designed to run Windows 98. It uses the
Cyrix GXi86 processor and the Cx5520 chipset
Whatever I do with the xorg.conf file - including adding relevant
modelines - I only get a blank screen with the Cyrix driver. I have
Googled this and read everything I could find. Unfortunately I cannot
find any document that mentions this driver running on this machine -
though there do seem to be a lot of doubts about the Cyrix driver
generally.
Is the Cyrix driver compatible with this Cyrix chip or I am doing
something silly? Or is there an updated version of the Cyrix driver
lurking somewhere, newer than the one shipped with Debian Etch or Sid?
I also tried the standard VESA driver, with & without modelines. In fact
I tried many! Here the best I can achieve, if I select 16 bpp is about
one second of a badly broken up screen and it goes back to the command
line. No (EE)'s shown in the log file.
I presume there *must* be a way to make this work because Alan Cox's
Palmax touch-screen driver is included in Xorg. Delighted to post my
xorg.conf(s) & Xorg.0.log(s) if that would help.
Can anyone point me towards any relevant documentation? All help,
pointers, observations and ideas gratefully received. Does anyone have a
Palmax PD1000 or PD1100 actually working under Xorg 7.x?
Best wishes, Garf.
Ps.
PD1000 is the earlier version of the PD1100...
