I see what you mean.  I'm accustomed to the somewhat more prolix ATI 
drivers and managed to miss it.  It looks like the 1280x1024 mode is being 
(quietly) thrown out because your built-in display lacks (or claims to 
lack) the bandwidth to handle it.

The only thing I can think of is to manually set HorizSync and VertRefresh 
to match your external monitor and use custom ModeLines (a 50kHz/60Hz 
1280x800 mode for the laptop and a 1280x1024 mode for the monitor).

Of course, what happens when you accidentally set the 1280x1024 mode with 
the laptop's display active is open to question.  Hopefully the worst is 
that it just goes blank and displays some "out of range" message.

Yeah, I get a 64kHz hsync for that, well outside the allowed range.
