KGI needs a kernel-specific layer, but the actual hardware-specific
device drivers are portable.
Note that for *part* of the driver functionality, this mechanisms
already exists today in the form of DRM.
And it really isn't a problem to have a fallback to the old way of doing
things, for systems that don't implement KGI.
