using laptop as second monitor?

Display managers often start the local Xserver with -nolisten tcp. So
the Xserver won't accept TCP connections. You said you were running KDE
on both machines? If I understand the idea correctly you should run a
naked X server on both machines instead (that listens to TCP) and run
KDE on Xdmx.
