Yes, it turns out to be surprisingly easy.
git clone http://anongit.freedesktop.org/git/xorg/lib/libX11.git
appears to work just fine.
Yes, you need the trailing '.git', no it doesn't end up in the directory
name you get. Go figure.
For new modules, make sure the 'post-update' hook is executable; that
updates the server information which makes all of this http stuff work.
