Handling (or not handling) of ctl-alt-<num_plus>

I'm using the i810 drivers on a Dell laptop D610 running FC5 with
the Xorg 7.0 drivers "xorg-x11-drv-i810-1.4.1.3-3.1".
On screen #1 (i.e. :0.1) on a dual-head display, I alternate between
to different external monitors of different resolutions (1280x1024,
and 1680x1050).
If I put *just* the 1680x1050 mode in the "Screen" section, then it
works at this resolution just fine. If I put the 1280x1024 resolution
alone then the 1280x1024 monitor also works fine.
If I put both, then the 1280x1024 monitor works fine, but the1680x1050
won't... and pressing ctl-alt-<num_plus> won't cycle through the modes.
Does this only work for Screen #0?
What am I missing here?
And I would have thought that if the Screen had multiple modes listed
(say in order of highest to lowest resolution or clock-rate), then the
server would try one after another until it found one that worked. Not
so.
If I have:
Modes "1680x1050" "1280x1024"
then the 1680x1050 monitor will *always* go into 1280x1024 mode.
