How to add support for rgba windows to a WM?

Hi,
I'd like to add support for rgba windows to Openbox.
Since the term "rgba window" is probably horribly wrong: I'd like to be
able to use transparent windows without using transset. An example for
such an app/window is the "alpha window" test from testgtk.
I looked for information on WM requirements for this stuff, but didn't
find much.
I did find a patch for metacity that probably enables the same feature,
but I couldn't confirm that so far.
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5148
I tried to do similar adjustments to the Openbox code, and it indeed
rendered the client area of the testgtk/alpha test window correctly, but
the frame was gone.
So, does anyone have more information on what exactly the WM needs to do
for rgba windows? Is there decent documentation anywhere? ;)
Thanks,
Tilman
