Starting (gl)xcompmgr for the GNOME desktop

 What is the recommended way to start (gl)xcompmgr for the GNOME desktop?

 Starting it via gnome-session seems to be a bad idea since it would be
 best if (gl)xcompmgr were started *before* both nautilus and
 gnome-applets.
