If you're new to X, stepping up to maintainership is a big first step.
There's a lot more reasonable projects to get started with in the todo
list in the wiki:

(For starters, getting this moved into wiki.x.org so it's easier to find
  would be an excellent newbie project.)

There's also a "janitor" keyword in bugzilla for simple maintenance tasks:
