If you tell xorg your screen size (DisplaySize  h (mm) v (mm) in Monitor
Section) it'll be able to compute the dpi by itself

Note xorg will compute the *real* dpi, so unless you have an actual
96dpi screen (most people don't) the computed value may be higher or
lower.

At this point GUI people who blindly followed the windows 96dpi
hardcoding will tell you xorg is wrong and offer you lots of ways to
force a fake dpi. (at one point is was easier to force a dpi value than
to write a gui app to put displaysize in xorg.conf, and now no one will
admit the dpi forcing bandaid was a bad idea)
