Installing "vga.pcf" font, font is not recognized

Dear X gurus!,
I'm failing to get a "MS-DOS" emulating font (vga.pcf or vga11x19.bdf,
vga11x19.pcf) to work. The fonts worked on the previous box, so should be ok.
Placing them into the /usr/share/X11/fonts/misc/ fontpath, mkfontdir, and a xset
fp rehash, xfs restart, did the job before.
Now with the new installation (one FC6 and also an FC4 box) I cannot figure out
why the fonts no longer work. As far as I could find out xfs should be able to
"serve" them.
On the current boxes (please find the details below) I get:
xterm -fn vga
Warning: Cannot convert string "nil2" to type FontStruct
xterm: unable to open font "vga", trying "fixed"....
The "vga" font obviously missing. But I cannot figure out why, find the details
below. They seem correct as far as I understand. There also is no error message
from xfs on loading the vga.pcf font.
What could be the problem here? I really ran out of ideas and information-input
sources. Any pointer, hints or ideas what to check or where to search would be
rof great help.
Thank for insight,
Georg
