Hiya.
I'm using a git-checked out Xorg tree (2006-12-08 15.42 CET).
On our boxen w. "ATI RV370 5B60 [Radeon X300 (PCIE)]", everything is fine.
On those with "Intel 82G965 graphics controller", the server is unable
to start up, complaining

.. after which the display is totally unusable.
Just for curiosities sake (and to get at least any X running), I tried
the vesa driver, which should at least give basic functionality, I thought.
Because of failing VBE DDC read, I nailed
======================================
HorizSync 31.5 - 48.5
VertRefresh 50.0 - 90.0

to escape "no usable configurations found...".
Still, there is no possibility to get a usable X:

The display, at least, keeps being usable. (well...).
Looking around a little, I tried the modesetting branch of the xf86-video-intel
driver as well, but it didn't solve the issue.
While it didn't bail out at startup, it also didn't succeed in showing anything;
it just didn't react to that :) , giving a blank screen with
"Wrong frequency" - message, after which the display was as unusable as was
the case with the i810 driver (HEAD).
I tried the released xf-video-i810-1.7.3 too, for reasons of completeness:
same result as with xf86-video-intel (HEAD).
The motherboard on which the integrated G965 chipset is living is an ASUS P5B-vm,
is anything known about a (Video-)BIOS problem with it?
Greets,
Jens
