Suppressing automatic modes

I am attempting to set up the version of Xorg that is distributed
with FreeBSD 6.1, and have run into a problem with one of the
automatic modes.

Is there a way, short of rebuilding and/or hacking source, to turn
off some (or all) of the automatically-calculated resolutions, and
have the server use *only* those modelines explicitly provided
in xorg.conf?  It looks as if an explicit modeline overrides any
automatic modes of the same name (resolution), but I have not yet
found a way to get rid of a resolution which I don't want to use
at all.

The most serious problem is that, on my hardware (ATI 4742 "GB"
chipset, Gateway FPD1530 flat-panel monitor), the highest-resolution
automatic mode (1280x960) does not work:  the monitor displays a
message to the effect that the input sync frequency is out of range,
and goes into standby after about 20 seconds.  This bad mode is used
as the initial mode since it has the highest resolution, and there
is no correct modeline that I can provide to override it because the
resolution exceeds the monitor's capabilities; so the server always
starts up in a non-working mode.  I can get to a working mode with
CtrlAltPlus, but then the desktop (which was sized according to the
initial, invalid, resolution) is too big for the screen.
