Why is image stretched vertically on widescreen monitor?

btw, I just realized why I thought that the pixels are square. The
monitor is running at 1680x1050. The physical aspect ratio of the
monitor is 16:10. 1680/1050 = 16/10.

So, the number of pixels per inch should be the same vertically and
horizontally. Does this make sense?
