what about ATI Radeon Xpress 200M

I have Xorg working (mostly) fine on my mobile Radeon X600 with
1280x800. I did not have to specify a custom mode line for that. All I
needed was a Display subsection in the Screen section in xorg.conf like
this (ignore the second mode 1280x768, that's for my TV):

        SubSection "Display"
                Depth           24
                Modes           "1280x800" "1280x768" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
        EndSubSection

Here is a snippet from my Xorg.0.log:

If this doesn't help you, let us see your xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log.
