Did the dri work (no lockup) with starting old xserver (xorg 6.8.2 no
fglrx) then
starting xserver from head (launching heavy gl apps like ut2003) ?

So far i was myself hunting for a bug which may be the same (radeon 9800
lockup) but i didn't found any clear difference between what fglrx does
and what we do.
