Do I need a host.def to build X?

I downloaded and unzipped the latest X.org sources,
then I went in to the 'xc' directory and entered:

  make World > World.log 2>&1

It runs for 20 minutes and then I see some errors at
the bottom of World.log, when I do this:

  less World.log

Shouldn't I be able to build without creating a
default /xc/config/fc/host.def file?

I'm using Redhat 7.3 and plan to eventually try to
build the KDrive Xvesa server.

I also tried this on Suse 9.3 and Ubuntu 5.04.
