libX11 and thread-safety

Yes.  In one case, I ended up not calling XInitThreads and using an
external mutex provided by the Gdk library as my application would
otherwise hang constantly.

I'm probably going to replace the Gdk/Xlib support with XCB and see if I
can't get that working.

Xlib's threading support is a disaster.
