Well, another solution would be for the Xserver to be a relay for our
braille protocol.  This means defining an X extension, writing Xorg /
Xsun / X* modules, patching all xterms too (since appplications running
in xterms shouldn't know about the X server, only xterms can be a relay
for them).

This is quite a lot of work, which we may do on the long run, but for
now the environment variable is a much easier solution.
