Official method for determining modular X module path?

Yep, it'll work for Fedora Core 5 and later OS releases also.
Fedora Core 4 and earlier, and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 and
earlier however use monolithic X.Org or XFree86, and so it wont
work on those releases.
