Is this really an xorg problem? It is the pdf app that embeds the font
in the file, not xorg. You run into the same issues using proprietary
fonts and pdf apps that embed fonts in the file. Hopefully that pdf
app doing the embedding alerts you to what is happening.

I would think that the only issue is whether xorg can distribute a GPL
font as part of it's package that is primarily MIT licensed without
infecting everything to become GPL. Isn't that dealt with by keeping
the GPL code isolated and clearly labeled? Fonts don't get linked into
the codebase.

Given xorg's lack of fonts we should consider every one that we can get.
