Yes. Note that this can already be done by drivers today; possibly the
biggest problem is that there's no mechanism to override autodetection
at runtime, e.g. when EDID isn't available or incorrect.

Probably, at least if the maximum resolution is lower than the screen
size.

Another big problem ATM (mainly due to XAA, according to Jim and Keith)
is that the screen can never grow beyond its original size.
