I've now done this, thanks Jeremy.  And a scan of the diff output 
shows only comment text changes and no changes in the code that I 
could spot, so I'm forced to agree that the code itself, with the 
exception of the generated version strings, is indeed otherwise 
identical.  This was run over the 2 directories in the as unpacked 
state, no make World had been done in either.

So color me puzzled.  The X built from the web page linked file, named
xorg-6.8.1-src.tar.gz doesn't work nearly as well here as the one from 
ftp.x.org, named X11R6.8.1-src.tar.gz does.

Phase of the moon?  DamnedifIknow...  I don't chew, so we can't blame 
it on the brand of chew and/or side of the mouth its held.  I didn't 
sacrifice any virgins as I generally save those for makeing the 
termination problems on a scsi bus solvable.  And I don't mess with 
the lottery till it gets over 100 million, in which case I support 
the cause with a 1 dollar ticket purchase *if* I happen to think of 
it at the same time I'm at GoMart buying another pack of nails for 
the wifes coffin...

So you younger guys go figure, my brain hurts already.  Oh, wait, 
thats probably because I need to stick my finger for sugar level and 
see what I can have for breakfast.  :-)
