I've been seeing the same thing.  This has been around for quite a while.

Note the last comments about the SuSE Liveeval working
(AFAIR, that also uses Xorg rather than XFree)

I was sure I saw this working on Debian at one point, but its possible
that I tested it also with XFree rather than Xorg.
