Composite & i810: almost instant crash

Hi all.

If I enable the 'composite' extension, I get graphic corruption,
followed by either a metacity crash, or ( usually ) an X crash as soon
as a launch an application, or occasionally just by itself.

I'm running xorg-6.8.1 with a 2.6.9-nitro kernel ( for reiser4 ), and
using the i915 driver.

This PC has an onboard i830 card.
Relevent output from lspci -v:

0000:00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corp. 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE/PE DRAM
Controller/Host-Hub Interface (rev 01)
        Subsystem: Dell: Unknown device 0161
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0
        Memory at f0000000 (32-bit, prefetchable)
        Capabilities: [e4] #09 [1105]

0000:00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corp.
82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE Chipset Integrated Graphics Device (rev 01)
(prog-if 00 [VGA])
        Subsystem: Dell: Unknown device 0161
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 11
        Memory at e8000000 (32-bit, prefetchable)
        Memory at feb80000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=512K]
Capabilities: [d0] Power Management version 1

The only thing in my X log was a message about X receiving a signal 11
and exiting. ( I'll produce another if someone wants the exact log, but
there's nothing of interest in there ).

There's also nothing in the kernel messages ( from 'dmesg' ).

Is the composite extension supposed to work with the i8xx family?

Dan
