X.Org mailing lists on x.org website are very nonconventional and irritating

Indeed, that seems to make the most sense IMHO.  X.org might want to
retain the lists in the x.org domain, however I think that is possible
with GNU mailman on another domain.  Might require some DNS work too
perhaps.
