Actually, you're incorrect.

This needs to be publicized more, but Fredrik Hoglund (one of the KDE
developers) put up a fairly comprehensive HOWTO at
http://ktown.kde.org/~fredrik/composite_howto.html - I'll see about
adding this to the Wiki somewhere.

If you want to implement a compmgr, this is a must-read IMHO.
