This is a simple, but insecure way to do it:
export DISPLAY=:1.0
./Xvesa :1 -ac -mode whateveryouwant & metacity & xterm
That will run the xserver as display 1 and it will run metacity and
xterm on it.
You can replace metacity by any window manager, or session manager
(gnome-session for example).
Another thing that you can do is to modify your (x|g|k)dm settings to
use Xvesa instead of the regular X.
