The answer to my question is to get the -DXDMCP define into the gcc command line when compiling the Xserver. I've done this using a brute force approach of adding it to the standard defines for gcc, as I've not found the "right way" to do it in host.def/cross.def/xorgsite.def etc. Seb James.
