What is the purpose of wanting to use OpenGL as the Window renderer?

Using OpenGL would require that X and OpenGL to render to a
common back buffer, so the two methods of rendering can be used
without conflicts. Maybe this is what OSX does? This would take
some work to get the two synchronized, and maybe not really
possible with closed-source OpenGL drivers.

Otherwise, how can you mix OpenGL rendering and X efficiently?

(Not that I've given it a lot of thought...)
