What you should do is to disable build by default and allow people 
to enable it if they have to. This will be a gentle hint that OS
maintainers should take action.
It would be even better to declare it deprecated and set a date by
which it will go away, announce and discuss it on the mailing list
(here) and on the Wiki (should we have a developers announce?). 
Unfortunately not every group that's interested in X is assembled 
here (yet).
