That is correct.  The Impression is a pre-Millenium series chip so it's not 
supported by the mga driver.  vga(4) would work, vesa(4) might.

The Impression Plus had a triangle engine, but doesn't seem to have had 
support for texture mapping, so it's not likely to be something that can 
(usefully) accelerate GL or Render in hardware.  The datasheet would tell for 
sure, but Matrox isn't in the habit of giving out documentation.
