3D acceleration an ATI Radeon IGP 340M (Mobility U2)

I have a problem getting 3D acceleration going on my laptop. Have
searched around a lot and tried several different "guides" that claim 3D
should run without major problems with this chip, but so far no luck.
Just this morning I managed to get glxgears to run with what seemed like
3D-acceleration (~300FPS, without acceleration it reports ~30FPS), but
it crashes my system after about 7 seconds. The system is completely
locked up. This is on Xorg 6.8.1 build from the source tarball. 
Then after I started up the system again and ran glxgears as a regular
user it said: "Disabling 3D acceleration", but as root it ran like
before including the system lockup. Perhaps this system lockup is
related to the kernel module because I wasn't able to ssh into the
system either.
The device /dev/dri/card0 seems to have appropriet rights:
crw-rw-rw-  1 root root 226, 0  8 dec 09.06 /dev/dri/card0

Can anyone point me in the right direction? I have read that this
chipset is supposed to have support within Xorg, but maybe I have
misunderstood this?

My system looks like the following:
*Linux 2.6.9 with agpgart compiled into kernel, ATI chipset support
enabled, Direct rendering enabled with ATI Radeon compiled as a module
*GCC 3.4.3
*Xorg 6.8.1
*fluxbox 0.9.11
*running gentoo, but with the "real" (unmodified) linux kernel.
