 Actually, the answers were both accurate.

 It's not used for anything, and it can't be removed.

 A longer-winded explanation would be that it's a dumping ground for any and 
all definable symbols that might appear as a result of some test in configure
but most of the symbols are irrelevant to large parts of the codebase, and 
including it directly would often result in those same large parts of the 
tree being unnecessarily rebuilt due to a tiny change that would have no 
impact on the compiled code.
