automake failure - why?

Yes I have this checked out. Indeed 'cfb16' has been remove, 
but NOT the CFB16_DIR empty macro which is still there.

This somehow confused automake (at my case) and sets its exit_code=1
and subsequently fails autoreconf -> build.sh and util/modular/build.sh.
