KDE recently moved to subversion, which is apparently similar to CVS in 
concept, but I don't know how much it would make branching/merging 
easier.  Radically different schemes include things like mercurial and 
monochrome, which are both supposedly fairly mature, and have bitkeeper 
like semantics (as I understand), which means they're made for 
branching and local repositories, etc.  I've found that to be a very 
nice way to work.
