domination isn't always a good argument, as some large software
companies show ...

I'd really loved to see imake continued, and would invest much
work in it by myself. It's not the best concept, but 1000x
better than autoshit.

About a year ago, @xouvert we had the discussion of working on
completely new approach, without any unstable macro stuff for 
somehow trying to control the buildprocess, instead an stricly 
descriptive model for the software's structure. The smallest
and most strict kind of information required for 100% deterministic
builds is the software's *structure* - any kind of build process 
can be derived from that and should not be in the scope of the
individual package developer.
