How about Option "ShadowPrimary"? If neither helps, please attach the
corresponding Xorg log file.

sysprof is very easy to use.

Yes, older driver versions generally can't compile against newer xserver
versions (at least not until the time machine is invented ;). Newer driver
versions still work with older xserver versions though, which is why I
suggested trying xf86-video-ati-7.7.0 and xorg-server-1.17.4.
