I presume that means the screen goes black when radeon KMS initializes, and
after a reboot there's nothing about it in log files?

Have you tried waiting for a couple of minutes to see if it comes up
eventually?

Did it work with 3.4 or older kernels?

If you mean what's shown in the attached Xorg.0.log, that's because
xf86-video-ati 7.0 no longer works without KMS.
