I think I have the same problem. In kubuntu 12.10 the fglrx driver doesn't work
anymore and Gallium3D give the overheat problem. My graphics card is a rv710
radeon hd 4350.
Using the KDE System Monitor I see the GPU's temperature
(lmsensors/radeon-pci-0200/temp1). The temperature rise up until 128ºC, after
it jumps to -128ºC and keeps rising until -50ºC aprox. Afterwards the computer
hangs. The fan (a noisy one that used to work when the computer make intensive
tasks) never works.
